Charity and you
There is this thing about giving to charitable organisations: you get a good feeling about the whole thing. We humans are essentially wired to be good. So it is easy for us to do good rather than something bad. Now this being common knowledge, can a scamster be far behind, waiting to target you at a gullible moment to make off with your hard earned money? The appeal for donations and help is everywhere now and hits everybody; right from the ones in a shopping mall to players sitting in changing room benches or to anybody who is well off.
So how does one differentiate the authentic from the fake? The best thing to do is to give to an organisation after doing some background check on the work they do. This gives you an idea where the resources you give are going. For all you know, such a check might well make you realise that it is not the group you want to support. It may then help you zero in on the appropriate group who could benefit from your charitable nature. If it is a donation you are keen on making, ask the organisation how the money is going to be used. You are also well within your rights to check if your donation has reached the right people.

While this may seem crass, it needs to be done to counter all the fake ones that seem to be proliferating everywhere. Like I said before, lot of people get ripped off as they are unknowingly begging to be fleeced. Giving is just a part of your association with charity. Most people just end it here. There is actually a lot more to charity than meets the eye. Like the saying of old, charity does begin at home – with some homework!
