Preparing your stuff to give to Oxfam
Oxfam are one of the World’s leaders in the charity field. More importantly, they are also one of the few organisations to stand the test of time and rarely run into anything you can label as controversy. It is their dedication to providing a solid service, as well as their most excellent volunteers, which makes for an amazing combination.
The problem many people have is a common one, though: they have stuff to give to Oxfam, but it’s either battered or they are not sure if they will accept it. Here are a few tips on this for you to follow at your leisure.
…consult the shop in person or visit their Facebook page…
1) Oxfam accept most anything, but you need to check with them first: all Oxfam stores are different. Some focus on music and fashion, while others have garden forks and random things. Some also are more book shops than anything, so it’s always wise to check what they accept before you turn up there with all that stuff!
2) If you’re taking something which has been sat on, worn or used by hands, make sure hygiene is looked after and you’re not putting other people at risk with something that isn’t even fit to go in a skip and be eaten by rats: what I mean by that is this – Oxfam don’t accept items which are not hygienically sound. That means stuff like knickers, or couch’s which are infested with fleas! One way to sort a couch out would be to buy a couch roll for it and cover it properly (once the fleas are dead of course!). This would make the surface much more comfortable, and when you hand it over you know that someone else will be able to enjoy what you are giving just as you originally intended. Definitely worth the effort!
3) Don’t be put off by large items: some Oxfam stores take really big items and will be happy to hear from you. Again, it all depends on the specific thing you have in mind, so consult the shop in person or visit their Facebook page and make contact with the manager.
4) Going back to the couch sheet idea, Oxfam are only too pleased to accept handmade things, so if you have recently made a chair or something else that’s really comfy, why not see if they are interested? It’d be good exposure for your stuff and would also be doing others a favour. Now that’s something we really can’t argue with!
